The Cold War.

The United States participated in many wars and conflicts in order to prevent the spread of communism. Instead, we attempted to instill values of free trade world wide. To analogize the conflict, there is an owner of a dog. He is not sure how to raise his dog. Does he simply feed it daily, acting as its sole provider of resources (which he himself acquires or creates) or does he allow his dog to go and hunt for food? If he opts for the latter, and the dog finds no food it will die. Maybe he is OK with this. He can surely argue either way and be more or less justified. But what happens when you bring up the question of why he domesticates and “owns” the dog, only to let it roam free? What do you say if he lives in an Apartment in New York City, where letting his dog look for food is a death wish?

In essence this is what America did. Surely, communism was no alternative as it was not as sound as my analogy. However, we fought wars and lost lives to stop this competing theory on economic practices. Was it necessary?

Just think. Aliens visit our planet and see the slaves of modern feudalism and free trade (read: free labor) or they could have come to a planet where huge monoliths or machines feed all the hungry and needy. Clearly these are both strange sights and clearly both need more thinking. Simply winning the argument, that capitalism is better, does nothing to aid the people of its inherent flaws.

Star Stuff

“The cosmos is also within us. We are made of starstuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.” Carl Sagan was the best at what he did. He allowed ordinary people to experience the beauty, complexity, and poetry of the universe. Reading quotes from him and his peers should make your skin crawl.
